I think
this is a great idea. The money goes to Tzedakah and Pizza Time gets tons of great press/pr/advertising. Everyone wins. I’m just curious, is there any Halachic issues with bidding or owning chometz that your going to eat after Yom Tov. I don’t think so, but I’m just wondering if it’s all, umm, Kosher, pardon the pun.

Please update your website. Your new CD has been out for a few weeks already and it still says “any day now.” You either have a website - or you don’t. But to have one and it just sits there with nothing on it and it has that embedded mp3 which crashes my browsers every time I go there. It’s just silly, and it’s a waste.

Even though I switched to Blogger Beta New Blogger a while ago. I don’t want to switch from the old template system to the new layouts system. I don’t want to lose my CSS menu for and second I don’t have the time to rebuild my template. Which I like the way it is. The only problem was that allthough I could tag things with a label it wouldnt show up on my template cause I didnt switch to thier layouts version of the template. So in the meantime I added the direct links to my labels in the form of a basic drop down menu.

I got a very interesting e-mail this morning.

Chaim,

In the past you’ve written about Hasc so I thought you would find this interesting. I went into a Judaica store yesterday to buy a new Hagada but somehow wandered off to the music section. I wanted to buy the Hasc19 DVD but I couldn’t find it on the shelf. I asked someone in the store and they told me that they had been instructed to pull them off the shelves because Hasc used the Carnegie Hall name without permission. - Rob

Wow. So that’s big. Just to confirm this I called a different Judaica store and I was given the same answer. A quick search of Mostly Music’s site and Sameach’s also confirmed that it wasn’t online anymore. If anyone knows more information please email me.

How could something like this happen? If they weren’t supposed to use Carnegie Hall’s name, then didn’t they think that there was a remote chance it would get back to Carnegie Hall? All they would have had to do is enter this google search and it would come up right away.

Related.

Recently a woman who was working at the Matzah Bakery was under suspicion of pretending to be Jewish just to work there. They were having a hard time confirming her heritage at first and it became a huge problem in Crown Heights. The Beis Din in Crown Heights ruled that any Matzahs bought from the bakery here were kosher but shouldn’t be used for the Seder. A lot of people were upset about this and people wanted refunds.
Today it’s being publicized that the matter has been resolved. The local Shliach in Minsk was able to track down through local sources the information and confirmed that she is indeed Jewish.

The worker, whose name is Iryna, informed the bakery that her mother lives in Belarus (White Russia). Rabbi Osdabo then telephoned Rabbi Shneur Deutsch, a young Chabad shliach serving the city of Minsk and who, like his fellow colleagues, is accustomed to receiving such requests for identity clarification.

After searching through the records of the Jewish Community in Minsk, Rabbi Deutsch located Iryna’s mother who goes by the name of MANTUZAUA LUBOU. Her mother told the Rabbi that her husband was a non-Jew who was appointed a senior officer in the Russian Army. For many years she did not have any connection with the Jewish community or Judaism and her knowledge of the religion is really nothing. “Except for ”Pesach,“ she did not know how to pronounce the names of the holidays,” said the Shliach.”

Very interesting. The article does not make clear if the Beis Din has now said you could use the Matzah for the Seder or not. But I suppose if she was confirmed to be Jewish then the entire issue goes away, right?

Sameach is giving away two Pesach songs away for free. You can download Yossi and Yerachmiel’s “Ma Nishtana” and the new “Yom Shekulo” both nice songs. Their cd was another one I liked but never got around to reviewing. Maybe when I have some down time I’ll review some of the CD’s I always push off reviewing.

I knew this was in the works. The OU in the past has been very quick to pull the lawsuit card. Like I said earlier, whether these allegations prove to be true or not there is a LOT of money at stake here. I am really not choosing a side here, I don’t know what to believe. But I will say that the Kashrus business and in particular the OU is multi million dollars business that could lose so much in the face of a real kashrus scandal. It’s just upsetting that with a $10 million dollar lawsuit the entire debate might be squashed regardless of what really happened.

I really think that an independent third party investigation should be conducted. JWB says on Canonist’s website and I agree with him, that people are not educated about Kashrus. We’ve become so dumb about everything, we put all our trust into these labels. We need to be more educated about the process. There should also be more accountability for kashrus organizations. It’s not just the OU that has these stories happen to them. Let’s just say for arguments sake that this guy was telling the truth. We’d never know without a third independent party being involved.

Getting back to the issue at hand, it’s put up or shut up time for Mr. Bitton. If he has some real hard evidence, now is the time to play his hand. Because I have a feeling that very soon, without any hard evidence the courts will shut down his website and the issue will be as good as dead.

UPDATE: I made a mistake, it’s La Marais that’s suing the Mashgiach. But I’m sure - at least behind the scenes - the OU is arm in arm with Le Marais.

Hey everyone. It’s a real pleasure and an honor to be able to host the 4th edition of the J-Pix carnival. This I believe will grow into one of my favorite weekly roundups. I love pictures and I love the candidness of these photographers. There all so random and just “life-like” it’s just wonderful. Thanks to Aaron of Bagel Blogger for setting up this great new carnival and if you’d like to host please contact him.

I know everyone always says this, but I mean it. I had some stuff going on yesterday and I know I probably missed a lot of photos. I think I included everything that was sent to me, but I didnt do a good enough job looking for stuff on my own. I hope what I do have here will hold you over till Pesach and if I did miss someones stuff PLEASE forgive me. I did NOT do it on purpose. Please go through the actual descriptions. I didn’t post all the pictures from ALL the posts, just some to highlight what to see in these posts.

…. and now for the pictures ……

A Simple Jew always has an abundance of wonderful images. Here are just some of them.

Snow Day, Maos Chitim, Antique and Grandma’s Coleslaw Bowl.

Rafi from the Life in Israel Blog has some Shechita pictures. Warning they might be a bit graphic. Rafi also posts about a recent drive to spend Shabbos in a Hotel in Moshav Nir Etzion.

Shiloh Musings has some revealing pictures from a recent border crossing.

She also has pictures from a bird spotting and from Shiloh of a traiditonal Pesach pilgrimage.

Mordechai gets a bracha from a Cohen before a test. Good idea, I wish I had thought of that when I was in school. Mordechai also has his photo of the week.

CosmicX has a really good image of some storm clouds hanging over Tel Aviv.

SoccerDad hints to what may be behind those extra calories.

Sarah With an H posts the appropriately titled “I’m Wiped” photo. She also has some pictures from her most recent trip to San Fran.

Josh took some really snow white pictures of … well … snow on Moutn Hermon.

Ezzie has an adorable picture of his baby girl on her birthday. Shep nachas my friend.

Speaking of adorable daughters, here is a precious shot of Harry and Ziva’s Tzofia.

Irina at The Ignoble Experiment has some pictures of Spring blooming everywhere.

Gogolan has some more interesting pictures of Lizards. GoGolan also posts some great random shots of a trip to Acco.

David also has some really wild pictures of Animals.

David takes some pictures of some interesting signs.

Jeremy has an image so amazing, you’d think it wasn’t real. It also just so happens to have been taken in Beit Shemesh.

Apple770 links to a really amazing Chabad Art slideshow. There are some really classic and famous paintings here.

Last but not least (you have to say that right?) it’s not a phot per se, but it’s artistic related. Jewschool has gone under another radical redesign. I for one, love it.

The reason this comic seems familiar? I think there was a version of this exact comic, but instead it had Saddam. The U.N. is useless as they always have been. This is why we had to finally do something with Iraq. After years and years of useless resolutions and statements nothing ever got done. Iran has captured British sailors and I’m surprised the world leaders are so quiet. Why aren’t we seeing a stronger stance on the release of these sailors? The only thing more appropriate for the comic above would be if the U.N. guy was laying down on his back. Because that’s what Iran has been doing now for years, walking all over the U.N.
