Many people started discussing this yesterday, but there is an 7 hour time gap between the (ONE!) missile that hit the building and the time that the building collapsed.

There is an unexplained gap of about seven hours between the one Israeli air strike that hit the Qana building housing the civilians, which took place around 1 A.M. Sunday, and the first report that the building had collapsed, said the chief of staff of the Israel Air Force, Brigadier General Amir Eshel. Speaking at a press conference at the Kirya military complex in Tel Aviv last night, Eshel said that of three Israeli air strikes on Qana early Sunday, only the first strike hit the building in which the civilians were staying. The other two hit areas at least 400 meters away.

“I can’t say whether the house collapsed at 12 A.M. or at 8 A.M.,” said Eshel. “According to foreign press reports, and this is one of the reports we are relying on, the house collapsed at 8 A.M. We do not have testimony regarding the time of the collapse. If the house collapsed at 12 A.M., it is difficult for me to believe that they waited eight hours to evacuate it.”

What’s that sound you hear coming from world leaders everywhere? Why my friends, that’s the sounds of silence. I was just thinking, Kofi is upset that the Israeli’s killed civilians in attempt to destroy the enemy, but no one is upset at the enemy for firing all the time (about 100 rockets a day) at civilians. Where is the worlds outrage at Hezbollah that it’s entire focus is killing civilians? What’s that sound? That’s also the sound of silence.

One of the ways that we can do our part in defeating the enemy that threatens Israel is to do so on a spiritual level. Aside from Tzedakah and Tefilah, we must also engage in a campaign of chessed and kindness. What Hezbollah is doing is creating a giant evil, a darkness and if you want to dispel darkness you simply turn on the light.

Here are some things going on and some ways to get involved. I suggest everyone make an effort to take on an extra Mitzvah or improve upon something that we do already, but with extra Kavanah.

What we have in the Israeli army is the kindest and most merciful army in the world. Never before has a country had so many neighbors sit near its doors and wait for the right time to attack. Never before has a country which was attacked first had to give back land it conquered in those wars. Never before has a country had as much restraint as Israel has shown even under constant threats and decades of terror.

Never before has a country taken care of the people it hurt, the ones in error, to their hospitals and treated them. Never before has an army gone so out of its way to give notice and warning to the people and places it intends to attack. Never before has one country been vilified and attacked so much in a conflict in which it didn’t even start or provoke. Never before has an army agreed to such a one sided cease fire with an enemy in which it already had a cease fire and were the only ones to abide by the conditions of.

… and still, they apologize, the show signs of remorse, the band together, the show restraint and they give us all the strength and courage to continue on.

Some War Humor

This Cox & Forkum comic really says it all. Why they refuse to ever recognize terror is beyond me. If it was 5 guys and they use explosives, then is it classified as terrorism?

The BangItOut Blog has audio from a hysterical prank on a Burger King in Beirut. I couldn’t stop laughing, it was hilarious.

Of course, last but not least, I know this has been all over the J-Blogosphere already, but it’s too funny not to include in this post.

Never Again?

Is it just me or are we now seeing either a “swastika painted on synagogue” or “Jewish cemetery desecrated” story about once every 2 weeks going on about 6 months now.

What is happening today? I don’t think for a second that this is the work of some underground Nazi organization, but what I do think it is, are some bored teenagers who unimaginably think what they are doing is cool. Which begs the question, has being anti semitic become the “in” thing today?

Which begs the even more serious question, how did this become cool amongst 18-25 year olds? Was this the byproduct of their behind closed doors antisemitism by their parents? I mean, look, even Mel freaking, Gibson has now been (officially) outed as a raging anti-semite. Does everyone think this way? This all begs the most frightening question of all. If today it’s “cool” to be an Anti-Semite, what will happen as this trend evolves over the next 20 years? It’s a very scary thought, one that I could never bare taking to a hypothetical conclusion.

This is so funny, it’s literally beyond words. These Bochurim were doing Mivtzoim in Brighton Beach, NY when they encountered this J for J guy. They got him to put on Tefilin and probably be closer with Hashem than he has ever been in his life. The sad truth is that these people need our help more than anyone else. They are also Yidden. Yidden who have fallen the furtherest from the path that you could fall. They still have a Jewish Neshama and they still have a Pintelle Yid.

I know they say not to engage them in discussion, but sometimes I feel like the answer to the J for J problem is turning the tables on them and trying to bring them back to Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

I hope in some way, this holy Mitzvah of Tefilin that he performed will wake up that Pinetelle Yid, that tiny spark of godliness left inside him and bring him back on a path to Teshuva.

I’m so serious, don’t you think it’s about time? I don’t know a single thing about the U.N.’s guidelines for it’s leadership, but can the U.S. bring up a resolution to censure the Sec-General? I think he needs a political slap in the face. People like him who have no one to answer for feel like they can do and say whatever they want.

This guy, who is so blatantly and obviously an anti-semite is actually telling the word that he thinks the Israeli’s specifically wanted to kill those U.N. workers. Stop for a second, and think about what that means. Kofi Annan, the Secretary General of the United Nations, thinks the Israeli government has it in them, that they could be so evil, that they would actually want to murder 4 Innocent civilian’s who were there on a mission of peace. He thinks the Israeli government would murder 4 unarmed men who had nothing to do with this conflict , so to speak.

Do you have any clue how serious that is? Are we just caught up in the moment over the actual story to really concentrate on the seriousness of his charges?

Worse of all, now after evidence has come out that Hezbollah was using this U.N. post as a shield, Kofi still presses on with his claim. What’s even funnier is that this isn’t the first time Hezbollah has used the U.N. in their terror efforts. It’s not the first time Hezbollah has done something so unthinkable. Like using their own people as shields, transporting themselves in ambulances. Setting up rocket launchers near hospitals and mosques.

Wouldnt it be easier to assume this was connected to Hezbollah doing something wrong. Then to assume the Israeli’s are cold blooded murderers? Isn’t there anything we can do to censure him or something? I’m dead serious, we need to do the same thing we do to our children when they don’t tell the truth or they do something wrong. We tell them it was wrong, send them to their room, and they can’t come back out until the understand what they did and apologize. Which in Kofi’s case would be never, which would be the best case scenario for everyone.

OrthoMom has more on this subject too.

Summer Sucks

So I was walking all day from building to building. I am getting really, really tired. I’m away on business and I should be back by Sunday. The hotel has internet access and I have my laptop, so if I get bored I will try to post more. My feet are killing me, it’s scorching hot, and I have a crazy huge craving for a thick juicy steak and fries. Taking meat away from us is cruel. I tried so hard not having to go now. I really did, but sometimes this is just the way the cookie crumbles. Of course the worse punishment of all is that these stupid hotels only have CNN. Somehow this all seems like this is what hell would be like. It’s hot, no meat, and CNN all day long!!!

First of all, I just wanted to mention that Artscroll is offering those specific chapters of Tehillim that Rabbanim around the world have asked that we say for Israel. You can download them all here. Scroll down and either click the thumbnail to see a larger image or download the PDF’s here, here, here, here and here.

Yesterday I posted Kapitol 142, which was composed after Dovid Hamelech came out victorious from his wars. Today I am posting Kapitol 83. This is one of the chapters that Rabbonim have recommended us reading. Via Chabad.org, they have made available Rashi’s commentary on Tehillim. Click here for the Hebrew if you wish to say it along.

It’s also incredibly interesting to note that this week in Ireland an archaeological dig team found a Tehillim which they have dated to be at least 800 years old. It was opened up to this page, Chapter 83. Still don’t believe in the power of Tehillim?

CHAPTER 83
A prayer regarding the wars against Israel in the days of Jehoshaphat, when the nations plotted against Israel.

1. A psalm, a song of Asaph.

2.
O God, have no silence, do not be silent and do not be still, O God.
Rashi: have no silence Do not give silence to our wrongs, with which our enemies harm us.

3.
For behold, Your enemies stir, and those who hate You raise their heads.

4.
Against Your people they plot cunningly, and they take counsel against Your protected ones.

5.
They said, “Come, let us destroy them from [being] a nation, and the name of Israel will no longer be remembered.”

6.
For they have taken counsel with one accord; against You they form a pact.
Rashi: against You they form a pact This pact is only against You, to cause Your name to be forgotten, for You are called the God of Israel, and since Israel
will not be remembered, even Your great name is not remembered. I found this.

7.
The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites.

8.
Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek, Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre.

9
. Also Assyria joined them; they were the arm of the children of Lot forever.
Rashi: Also Assyria Even Assyria, which until that day was careful of other foolish counsels and would not join evildoers, as it says (Gen. 10: 11): “From that
land Asshur went forth,” that he left the counsel of the generation of dispersion [which built the tower], joined them here and assisted them for evil. (In other
commentaries I found this:) Also Assyria joined them, etc. Also this one, who initially loved good deedsfor he separated from Nimrod’s counsel, as it is said:
“From that land Asshur went forth” he too reverted to wickedness. Therefore, he participated in destroying Your temple. Genesis Rabbah 37:4.
Rashi: they were the arm All these gave strength and aid to Moab and Ammon, our neighbors, to come upon us.

10.
Do to them as [to] Midian; as [to] Sisera, as [to] Jabin in the brook Kishon.
Rashi: Do to them as [to] Midian through Gideon.as [to] Sisera through Barak.

11.
They were destroyed in En-Dor; they were [as] dung on the ground.
Rashi: They were destroyed in En-Dor I do not know which of the wars took place in En-Dor, that of Gideon or that of Barak.dung Heb. דמן, scattered dung, as translated by Jonathan.

12.
Make them, their nobles, as Oreb and as Zeeb, and as Zebah and as Zalmuna all their princes.

13.
Who said, “Let us inherit for ourselves the dwellings of God.”
Rashi: Who said These nations mentioned above: Edom, Ishmael, and all their allies. “Let us inherit for ourselves the dwellings of God” The dwelling of the house of God.

14.
My God, make them like thistles, like stubble before the wind.
Rashi: My God, make them like thistles, like stubble which are driven away by the wind. Now what is גלגל ? It is the tips of the thorns of the field, which are
called chardons in French, thistles. When winter arrives, they are plucked out and disintegrate, and little by little they fly [away]. The part that is plucked out
of them resembles the wheels of a wagon, and the wind carries them.

15
. As a fire that burns in a forest and as a flame that burns mountains.

16.
So will You pursue them with Your tempest, and with Your whirlwind You will terrify them.
Rashi: and with Your whirlwind Tourbillon in French, whirlwind.

17.
Fill their faces with shame, and they will seek Your countenance, O Lord.

18.
Let them be ashamed and terrified forever; let them be disgraced and perish.

19.
Let them know that You-Your name alone is the Lord, Most High over all the earth.”

Part 1 HERE.

Isn’t it funny how the U.N. never talks about humanitarian aid to Israel? After all they have only had close to 1200 rockets rain down on Haifa, Tsfat, Tiberia, Carmiel, Naharia and everything North. After all, how many families in Israel have been displaced or their homes, business, synogogues ruined.

Yet not a peep from the UN about urgent humanitarian aid. I don’t hear cries from Israeli’s holding dual passports looking to sue the U.S. for not doing something to stop the violence. I don’t hear about any money to help all the people in desperate need of Tzedakah. I guess we only have ourselves to reply on. How sad how little the international community cares for the well fare of an Israeli. I guess the only answer is more Tehilim and more Tzedakah.

I’m wondering if the longer this goes on the smarter people are getting. I’m starting to see some stories and articles which are turning in Israels favor. Richard Cohen who either has a serious battle with schizophrenia or simply changed his mind, has changed his tune this week. (HT Boker Tov)

The U.N. humanitarian chief accused Hezbollah of “cowardly hiding”, which is really amazing considering their recent cries of Israeli War Crimes.

Then you have this story about a CNN reporter basically admitting that Hezbollah had complete control over the news segment.

“Challenged by Reliable Sources host (and Washington Post media writer) Howard Kurtz on Sunday, Robertson suggested Hezbollah has “very, very sophisticated and slick media operations,” that the terrorist group “had control of the situation. They designated the places that we went to, and we certainly didn’t have time to go into the houses or lift up the rubble to see what was underneath,” and he even contradicted Hezbollah’s self-serving spin: “There’s no doubt that the [Israeli] bombs there are hitting Hezbollah facilities.”

If more of these stories would leak out through the main stream press, maybe people would start understanding exactly what this enemy is all about. I’ve now heard reports that Hezbollah is moving around the country in Ambulances. Who kind of animals are these people and who in their right mind could even begin to defend them. How people are celebrating and cheering Israel on is beyond me. Read more about Hezbollah’s savvy and slick media operations here from Anderson Cooper. I just hope he is saying this on the air, and not only in his blog.

Then again, maybe the battle is still far from over. People out there like Betty Williams a Nobel Peace Prize winner (You remember? The same award Arafat received) condemned Bush for allowing the “murder of Innocent children in the Middle East.” She then went on to tell this crowd of young children “Right now, I would love to kill George Bush.” Her young audience at the Brisbane City Hall clapped and cheered.

Even with the UN Humanitarian chief saying one thing, the UN has still today come out and once again played the “Disproportionate” card. This time in Gaza. What I don’t get about this whole disproportionate thing is, if two sides are fighting, doesn’t one have to have more force to win? Isn’t every war ever fought eventually completed by one side being disproportionate to the other? If two boxers are slugging it out, and they both use equal force, after a while either nobody ever wins, or they both knock each other out, thereby both losing.

The other thing about the concept of Disproportionate is that it seems as though the people using this word think that Israel should go tit for Hezbollah or Gaza’s tat. Do they want us to use the same “proportionate” methods in this war? Should we be bombing Palestinians public transportation on pizza shops? Should we be launching rockets unprovoked into another county and kidnap our enemies soldiers? What else could they want, they don’t want to enforce the peace (Resolution 1559), they don’t want us to defend ourselves. So what do they want?

Even more sobering is yesterdays accidental killing of 4 U.N.workers, of which Kofi Annan has said some startling and nasty things. Kofi is going around telling people he thinks the Israeli’s purposely targeted the 4 U.N. workers. What a disgusting human being. He actually wants people to believe that the Israelis killed these people on purpose. It’s like he thinks WE’RE the terrorists. Even sadder is the fact that when U/N workers were involved the day in an attack by Hezbollah, the media refereed to them as being “caught in the crossfire” and we didn’t hear these same cries of deliberately attacked” from the U.N. chief. So I guess the battle for public favor is still very far from over.

One of the things that we can do to help the situation in Israel is to say Tehillim. Despite what you may have read today elsewhere, there should be no doubt as to the incredible powers that our Tehillim posess. Over the next couple days I will post stories about Tehillim and selected chapters from Tehillim that pertain to the current situation in Eretz Yisroel.

If you know of a power of Tehillim story and would like me to post it, please e-mail me at lifeofrubin@gmail.com

The 3rd Lubavitcher Rebbe, known as the Tzemach Tzedek said in the name of Rabbi Yehuda “Whatever Dovid Hamelech say’s in his book pertains to himself, to all of Israel and to all times.”

“If one would only know the power of verses in Tehillim, and their effect on high, one would recite them continually. The verse of Tehillim transcend all barriers and ascend higher and higher, imploring the Master of the Universe, until they achieve results of kindness and mercy.” (Hayom Yom)

In the times of the Beis Hamikdash (Holy Temple) Tehillim had a formal, designated purpose, as they were sung by the Levi’im to the music of the lyre while the Kohanim offered up sacrifices. After the destruction of the second temple, many of the Psalm were incorporated into standardized liturgies to be recited as part of formal prayers. (Taken from the introduction to Ohel Yosef Yitzchok)

The first Kapitol (Chapter) I want to present to you is a beautiful and timely piece composed by Dovid Hamelech after triumphing in all his wars. He composed this to praise Hashem for his victories. Read through the English and take from it what you will. Here is the same Kapitol in Hebrew if you wish to say it along.

“Chapter 144

1. By David. Blessed be the Lord, my Rock, Who trains my hands for battle and my fingers for war. 2. My source of kindness and my fortress, my high tower and my rescuer, my shield, in Whom I take refuge; it is He Who makes my people submit to me. 3. O Lord, what is man that You have recognized him; the son of a mortal, that You are mindful of him? 4. Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow. 5. O Lord, incline Your heavens and descend; touch the mountains and they will become vapor. 6. Flash one bolt of lightning and You will scatter them; send out Your arrows and You will confound them. 7. Stretch forth Your hands from on high, rescue me and deliver me out of many waters, from the hand of strangers, 8. whose mouth speaks deceit and whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood. 9. God, I will sing a new song to You, I will play to You upon a harp of ten strings. 10. He who gives victory to kings, He will rescue David, His servant, from the evil sword. 11. Rescue me and deliver me from the hand of strangers, whose mouth speaks deceit and whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood. 12. For our sons are like plants, brought up to manliness in their youth; our daughters are like cornerstones, fashioned after the fashion of a palace. 13. Our storehouses are full, overflowing with all manner of food; our sheep increase by the thousands, growing by the tens of thousands in our open fields. 14. Our leaders bear the heaviest burden; there is none who break through, nor is there bad report, nor outcry in our streets. 15. Happy is the nation for whom this is so. Happy is that nation whose God is the Lord.”

Reb Shlomo always had a way with words, I posted this a while back, but I think this is a very approrioate time to repost it.

“You know my friends, sometimes it makes me happy, sometimes it makes me sad …. Israel has no friends in the world, the holy land, the holy people of Israel are all alone.

But you know what we have, do you know, do you know, do you know what we have?

Yisroel Btach Bashem, we have one friend, one friend in heaven, Yisroel Btach Bashem, Ezram U’maginam Hu - Shlomo Carlebach”
