I was always afraid that Planet of the Apes seemed all too plausible. Story HERE
Amazing fact most people didn’t know (me included) Matisyahu’s hebrew name … not Matisyahu … it’s Feivish Hershal. Yeah .. Whoah. I’d like to have seen Sony promote that name on MTV. The article isn’t up on their website yet, I might scan it later today or tomorrow. I’ll see how busy I am.
I got some things back from the cleaners yesterday.
This was on one of my shirts. That’s right I’m a party animal ….
or maybe just a little too clumsy with the Chrain. Take your pick.
This is the article in the Village Voice.
Black puppeteers have masterminded successful white musical acts for decades. But while Ruff Ryders producer Swizz Beatz tinkered behind the curtain to make multi-million-selling tracks for the likes of Limp Bizkit, Metallica, and Marilyn Manson, more and more black producers and white artists are celebrating the symbiotic coup of connecting the cred that comes with blackness to the dollar signs studios see when they can market hip-hop hybrids with a white face to white kids. Universal Music and Texas-based label Swisha House are banking on it with their respective September releases of Miri Ben-Ari’s Miri Ben-Ari: The Hip-Hop Violinist and Paul Wall’s The People’s Champ.
Then there is an article in today’s NY Post as well.
In an unusual collaboration, Reebok and Universal Motown Records co-produced a music video for Miri Ben-Ari, an Israeli violinist, whose blend of hip-hop and classical styles has made her a favorite among recording artists like Kayne West and Alicia Keys. While collaborations between Corporate America and the entertainment world are commonplace today, Reebok’s involvement with Ben-Ari goes beyond the usual product…
Maybe Nike will sign Matisyahu. Who knows.
I am not making this up and I didn’t get this some office joke e-mail forward. This was sent to as is, looking completely normal. E-mail spam should has come a long way. This somehow made it through my spam filter.

Oy! Laurence Simon, I love your wit! This is a must read.

Q: Why is it on a different day every year?
A: It’s not. It’s on the first of Tishrei, you moron.
Q: On American New Year’s, you eat black eyed peas for good luck. What do you eat on Rosh Hoshana?
A: Apples dipped in honey, bread dipped in honey… we dip a lot of things in honey. Once, I paid for my apples and bread with a credit card. It was dipped in honey along with the receipt. Do you know how hard it is to sign something that’s been dipped in honey?
Q: How do you pronounce that bread that Jews eat on Rosh Hoshana?
A: “Bread.”
Q: Why is no work permitted on Rosh Hoshana?
A: Because the synagogue doesn’t have Wifi and we forgot the cable to connect the laptop to the cell phone.
Well you can’t!
… because this stupid site doesn’t work. It tells me I needs a password.
Apparently I’m not “authorized” lol … I waw this ad in Today’s Jewish Press, and I was really curious to learn more.
Oh well ….I guess I’ll just have to drink cold coffee.
I first saw
this story last night on the local NY news channels. The story is about a women who was sitting on a park bench, in a children’s park. The rules of the park state that adults can not be in the park and sitting on the bench if you are not with a child. Two cops came by, pointed out the law and gave her a ticket which results in a $1,000 fine or up to 90 days in jail. The News Channels were all ooing and aahing about how horrible that was. How unfair and unjust that was. I disagree, I think it’s completely fair, very sane, and she has no defense. But first let’s see what her defense was.Her defense was three fold:
A)
She say’s she didn’t see the sign.B)
She say’s she always see’s other people without kids come through the park. She said she even see’s people with pets, and no pets is one of the rules.C) It’s an unfair rule, everyone should be able to enjoy these parks.
Let me address each one on it’s own.
A) No seeing the sign is the worst excuse ever. I’m sorry. Let me try that one when I’m doing 90 MPH on the Belt Parkway. “Oh Officer, this ticket is unjustified, I didn’t see the sign. I was in such a rush to get home, I just didn’t think to look.” - Come on …Think of something a little better.

B)
The “other people do it” defense is almost as bad. Really, in some way’s it’s worse. Not reading the sign, which had many rules on it, and is placed pretty prominently is just lazy. Saying it’s ok cause everyone does is it, well, that’s just idiotic. That excuse didn’t work when I was ten and my brother got away with something, so I tried it and then got busted. That excuse wouldn’t work If I tell the cop that someone passed me two minutes ago going 95, and that excuse doesn’t work here either.C) Let’s address the actual rule. The rule is designed to keep pedophiles out the park. Now I’ve watched enough episodes of Law and Order: SVU to know that this is a serious problem. We’ve all seen in the news the recent stories of children being abducted and the horrible unspeakable tragedies that occur from these evil people. If you ask me there aren’t enough laws like this in place. These are our children, and the most vulnerable victims. We need to go out and beyond the norm to protect them.
So Nebech, you can’t sit in a park designed for children. If you haven’t seen the pictures associated with this story, this was a park with swings, slides &jungle gyms. This isn’t some nature spot in Central Park. This isn’t some jogging path, this is a place gated off, and designed specially for children to come and play. Deal with it. We have to have stronger laws when it comes to protecting our children from predators.
I have no problem with parks having laws like this, and I don’t feel bad at all that she got a $1000 fine. I hope people will see the publicity of this incident as a deterrent to possible criminals.
As for the other people who go through this park without children and aren’t being given tickets, well, I think they should. They need to enforce this rule. I encourage those cops to be even more stringent and make sure that these parks are kept safe.
This is a great article in Wired Magazine about regular non promotional and marketing type people being able to submit their idea’s for ads and such.
“At one point or another, everyone thinks they have a brilliant advertising idea. The problem is that it’s impossible to get that idea to the right ears. Now a new website will act as the middleman between companies looking for fresh ideas and would-be advertisers.
Per Hoffman started Adcandy so the public could contribute their original advertising ideas and possibly even see them used to sell their favorite products. “People want to participate in all forms of culture, so why not commercials, for better or for worse?” said Hoffman.”

Yesterday I had a meeting by a client on the Upper West Side. I went with a coworker and when we past this establishment in the car he told me that this was the restaurant that they used for the outside shot for Seinfeld.
I don’t spend too much time on the Upper West Side. It’s nice there, but I was really excited to see this place. I LOVED Seinfeld, and I still think he is one of the top comedians of this generation. So for those of you who don’t live here, or haven’t seen it before, we took some drive by shots of the place from the car.
ASJ sent me this e-mail, and I wanted to post it here. (with his permission, of course)
Chaim:
A call from my wife just made me think of your posting from Shavous on the $45 dollar cheese cake. My wife called and told me that a local kosher supermarket was selling tayglach for $10.99 a serving.
Isn’t there a halacha that you can not overcharge someone over a certain percent? Perhaps the local Vaad should consider removing its supervision to stores that price gouge.
What do you think?
All the best,
A Simple Jew

I don’t know if there is such a Halacha. There must be something close to it, or that addresses it. If anyone knows of something more specific please let me know. Price gauging on Holiday items is just wrong. You are forcing people to pay much more for something simply because it’s that time of year and they need it.
The post ASJ is referring to is this.
If anyone has any stories on this topic please leave a comment or e-mail me. I will be happy to post it.
