A free concert at Queens College featuring Shloime Dachs, Moshe Shur, and the 3 “ex” Chevra guys. Who seem to have no problem calling themselves the Chevra even though from Yosis Orchestra, we know very well that there is a “new” Chevra. But that’s neither here nor there.
What do they do if (lol) 20,000 people show up? Are they gonna just let in the first 800? How many people does that place hold? At an event in which Jews ALWAYS show up last minute, how on earth will this thing go down.
Also, whats the connection between this and James F. Gennaro why is he sponsoring it, is he just looking to get his name out there in the Jewish Community?
It smells too much like “PR Stunt” and too little like “Benefit”At least if your doing a 9/11 concert, money should go to something 9/11ish. No?
(and no, I don’t consider vollentery donations to One Israel Fund/Gush Katuf 9/11ish, I called that Israel’ish)
It’s just amazing how large the potential for good on the internet is.
here is Craig’s list’s effort to help out with (anything) Hurricane Katrina related.
This New Orleans newspaper has done one of the best jobs covering the story anywhere.

Just when you thought it was safe to give someone a compliment. They come back and bite you on your as you know, I wrote a post a couple months back about Mostly Music’s habit of overpricing. Everyone who reads this blog by now, should also know when I see shady marketing by “frum” companies I like to point it out. Last week, I noticed on Mostly Music’s site they started offering as a promotion, 99 cents shipping anywhere in the US, and very low prices to Israel.
Today through FiveTownsRadio.com, I received a promotional e-mail from Mostly Music.
Now I don’t think it’s so kosher that FiveTownsRadio is giving off their mailing list to send unsolicited e-mails from companies, but that’s a whole other story. On the bottom of this e-mail is Mostly Music’s “Top Ten” sellers, top ten oldies, and top ten video’s. You’ll notice I highlighted that of the 30 titles listed, 17 are from Aderet (Mostly Music), out of 5 Jewish Music labels/distributors there, (Aderet, Sameach, L’Chaim, Greentek & Gal Paz) they claim over 50 percent of them are their own.
In the top five of the top ten sellers overall, 4 out of 5 are distributed by Aderet. Ok, that’s not soo hard to believe. I think it’s suspicious, but still POSSIBLE, no? Take a closer look, It’s hard for me to believe that a cd (Lipa Schmeltzer Project X) which was released Lag B’omer, is outselling a brand new Blue Fringe album. Ok, I hear you, it’s Boro Park. They are also an online store, but maybe because they are in Boro Park, Chaseedish, Conservative, Frummies, that skews the numbers for Lipa over Blue Fringe.
The problem is that Blue Fringe is outselling (according to this) Miami Boys Choir, Cantor Helfgott, Yaakov Shwekey (granted an old Shwekey) and Yeshiva Boys Choir. So the “Boro Park skew” theory should be tossed out the window. Even more so, because Moshav Band is #6 and outselling Yeshiva Boy’s Choir.
Let’s go further, is Aderet telling us that a Shwekey cd from last winter, sold more pieces than Miami Boys Choir’s pre-summer release? Are you telling me that Shwekey sold more than Yeshiva Boy’s Choir? Are you telling me that Yeshiva sold soo much less than Miami that Miami was #5 and Yeshiva was #10? Something smells fishy and it’s not just Ossie’s around the corner from Mostly Music’s store.
Come to think of it, this doesn’t help the validate the ad that MBC/Mendy Werdyger ran saying that Miami Boys Choir had sold 30,000 cd’s so quick, and an unprecedented number, bla bla, yada yada, Jewish Music history, bla bla. For G-ds sakes, Lipa Shmetlzer singing old songs on a Project Next from last Lag B’aomer sold more cd’s according to this list than a Miami Boys Choir, Yeshiva Boys Choir and a BRAND NEW Blue Fringe.
I’m not going to go through this anymore, but take one more look at the video’s. Eight out of the Ten listed there are Aderet titles. Please, come on. Please, how big of a fool do you think I am? How dumb do you think your consumers are? If you can’t even muster up one ounce of respect for us, I’m not bothering to show any for you.
Shockingly enough, the actual cd that was the focus of my “overpricing” post on Mostly a few months back, isnt anywhere on those lists. Yes, Matisyahu’s cd didn’t even make the top ten. The folks at MostlyMusic.com are telling us that the Shira Girls Choir Volume 2 (who? Ya, that’s what I said) sold more cd’s than Matisyahu. That Itzhak Pearlman sold more cd’s than Matisyahu.
Don’t try to tell me that “Jewish Rock” doesn’t sell at Mostly, because Moshav and Blue Fringe are both in the top 6 and Blue Fringe was #2.
Oh well, I guess thanks for the 99 cents shipping, 2 weeks left on that, so use it or lose it.

My heart goes out to the people of New Orleans. Chaos is everywhere, riots, hostage situations, no power, massive severe flooding, hundreds of deaths, Suicide, missing loved ones, pain, hurt & sadness. It’s hard to read it all, it’s even harder to see it all. May G-d bring strength and comfort to everyone who is suffering.
Laurence Simon tells us of some of the lesser known Jewish Holidays.
My favorite one is:
Festival of Misery
In this lively celebration of life, everyone sits around and talks about their health problems. Anyone who fails to talk about their health problems is likely dead, and they’re mourned openly. But first, we look through their pockets to pay the caterers. Not that they should be expecting a tip. You call this whitefish? I call it garbage! Feh!
Short Story:
Hatzaloh guy comes onto scene, thinks he’s all that and a bag of chips, city ambulance got there first. Things get heated, cops haul off the Hatzaloh driver, Sheldon Silver rides in on tall white horse, man is let go. Calm is restored.
Long Story:
“August 30, 2005 — A “hot-headed” volunteer ambulance driver was detained by cops last night after refusing to yield to a city ambulance crew that had arrived first at the Lower East Side home of an Alzheimer’s patient, police said.
The driver, from the Jewish volunteer corps Hatzolah, was hauled off by cops. But he was later sprung after about two dozen supporters, as well as Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, rushed to the Pitt Street station house.
The outcome was totally in our favor,” a man who identified himself as the president of Hatzolah said as he jumped into his car.
Silver said he had rushed to the precinct simply to “help mediate the dispute.”

UPDATE: A Photo of New Orleans under water.
(The white shiny stuff is water)
You know what I hate? Smug People. Last night I’m at this Simcha and a guy say’s “So that whole storm thing turned out to be nothing eh?”
Ya? Really? Nothing? Ya sure? At least 50 people have died in Mississippi, 9 people died in the Florida part of this, many could still be trapped or dead in the rubble of what was once their homes. Millions of people were or are still without power, some people will not have power for up to a month, homes were destroyed, roofs were ripped off, walls of whole office buildings were sliced off like a can of tuna, thousands of cars lay in the rubble, and let’s not forget that flooding that’s in some place up to 15 feet. Whole blocks are so covered in water, all you can see are their rooftops. The AP is now reporting that as much as 80 PERCENT of New Orleans is under water.
This is an amazing story, it really shows you how the new world of technology is affecting daily lives.
This is the deal, here is the original story, this is a blog entry questioning if this type of “citizen justice” is something good or bad, and this is today’s story where the man was identified. Amazingly enough, he is a co-owner of a restaurant.
Here is an article in WIRED, about a guy who’s camera phone was stolen, and he went online to see his online sprint picture phone account was active, with the thief taking pictures with his phone.
This also reminds of last week in the J-Blog world, arguing if outing bad people is considered Loshan Hara or not. In last weeks case we were talking about slum lords. My question to you is this, if this “flasher” was a frum guy, would those of you who were yelling Loshan Hara still say that now?
It’s my very strong opinion, that people who commit wrongful acts like this, cannot be protected under the “Loshan Hara” defense. They should be exposed, and innocent people should be protected from their potential harm. Whether it’s a flasher on a subway, or a Frum Jew with a Beard and Payos scamming people out of money.
This is really beautiful, I saw this in Jewish Press this week,

“My name is Raisa Moskowitz, as the daughter of a cancer patient, I want to raise money to help others with this illness. I am very proud of my dad, whose great attitude is contagious! To celebrate my Bat Mitzvah I am putting together a benefit concert to raise $30,000 for a wheelchair accessible pontoon boat for the campers at a magical overnight camp for children and teenagers with cancer. Please join me in this project and together we can just raise it!“
